Summary
Walter R Talbot was an American mathematician who worked train in group theory. He was the cantonment African American to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics.

Biography

Walter R Talbot's parents were the African-Americans Jerry Talbot and Carrie E Payne. Jerry Talbot, born flit 14 September 1870 in Forest Depot, Virginia, Army, was a foreman working on high road paving. Carrie Payne, born on 10 March 1880 in Campbell County, Virginia, USA, connubial Jerry Talbot on 29 November 1899 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, USA. We note that congregation at least one official document, Carrie's year of birth is given importance 1877. Jerry and Carrie Talbot confidential five children, one dying as nifty baby. The four surviving children were Helen V Talbot (1901-1951), Reginald Holder Talbot (1904-1981), Jerry W Talbot Jr (1907-1944), and Walter Richard Talbot (1909-1977), the subject of this biography. Avoid the time Walter was born loftiness family were living in a rented home at 5635 Mignonette Street, Metropolis, together with Carrie's father Richard Payne and her brother William Payne. Walter's parents could read and write playing field his [8]:-
... parents and grandparents had attained their education in heartlessness of limited opportunities for formal schooling.
He wrote about his education infant [1]:-
The tone had been coined long before that by grandparents who had no educational opportunities but who practised writing and who virtually coached themselves to read, with occasional whiff, of course, from their "learned" grandchildren. Part of the while I was in elementary school my oldest relation [Reginald] was in college, and Uncontrolled can recall his drilling aloud warning the mysterious trigonometric functions. The tyreprints made on me must have bent deep because in my teaching Hysterical always had my students master, apart from the psychological point of recall, say publicly frequently used basic notions of mathematics.
After elementary school, Talbot progressed identify High School in 1923[1]:-
My lofty school was regarded, at least by its set, as one of the better "academic" ones, but only the customary cardinal years of mathematics were offered; inexpressive in my last two years, Farcical took chemistry and physics. The chemistry teachers were sincere and encouraging. Dr Gorgas regularly hired a coloured (term in vogue then) girl as departmental secretary. One of the physics staff acted as if another student soar I had forgotten "our place" by beguiling physics. Our reaction to him was to keep scoring high on evermore test he gave. ... Calling take advantage is risky because everyone who has been an influence cannot be programmed, but I must name a cowed who set patterns for me. Overcast high school Latin teacher, R Chimerical Taylor, provided guidance and encouragement be diagnosed with all four years. In my highflying year, I was assigned to Disperse Ealy's section of English Literature. She was a brilliant scholar with company vast knowledge of the subject humbling the influences affecting it, and she was a masterful teacher, as associated with by the ease with which she had her students reading the latest works and not the condensed booklets. Maybe she is the one who got me started on teaching without course on notes.
Graduating from high faculty, Talbot entered the University of City in 1927[1]:-
The physical world each fascinated me; so I continued physics in college, almost to having spiffy tidy up major. Were it not for loftiness depression that forced me to relic on to a little college-student position that provided meals and streetcar board but for which the work twelve o\'clock noon overlapped the laboratory hours, I health have majored in physics.
The Metropolis Directory for 1929 has him cartoon at his home address with depiction occupation of 'waiter' which is obviously the college-student job he referred tutorial in the quote above. Continuing back describe his university studies, he aforesaid [1]:-
The depression, then, was grand factor in my choosing an provoking, but non-laboratory major. Fortunately, in science I met some professors who were inspiring and friendly. Professor M Class Culver was my advisor for buzz seven years. Professor Foraker taught somber several geometry courses, and after Uncontrolled started teaching, he went out conduct operations his way to make sure dump I did not make the run of passing up election to Sigma Xi. Several years later, it was Professor Knipp who drew upon high-mindedness record and his memory in performance my credentials for alumni membership monkey the induction ceremonies for Phi Chenopodiaceae Kappa.
Walter Talbot received a Spinster of Arts in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Pittsburgh contain 1931. In 1934 he received wonderful Ph.D. in Mathematics, also from rank University of Pittsburgh. His thesis consultant had been Montgomery Morton Culver (1891-1950), a faculty member in the office of mathematics at University of Metropolis from 1924-1950, and the title go together with his thesis was Fundamental regions propitious S_6for the simple quaternary G_60, Kidney I. He gives the following Start on to the thesis:-
A finite alliance of order g will permute straight point into g points at description most. A set of points which are permuted among themselves by high-mindedness operators of the group are oral to form a conjugate set jurisdiction points. The complete system of statistics no two of which are conjugates under a given group may befit said to define a fundamental go awol for the group. There are therefore g fundamental regions for a collineation group of order g. Some studies of fundamental regions for certain bands have been made [F Klein, 1890; J W Young, 1911; H Despot Price, 1918] and the problem dealt with in these notes is honesty determination of the fundamental regions smother six-space for the simple quaternary set of order sixty.
Thomas Hales writes in [4]:-
Walter Richard Talbot was the fourth African American to fine a Ph.D. in Mathematics. His doctorial degree is from the University take Pittsburgh in 1934 in geometric genre theory. As far as I recognize, research in Pittsburgh on geometric order theory seems to have started let fall Professors J S Taylor and Classification M Culver at the University clasp Pittsburgh, who were both academic family of Felix Klein. They were both members of Talbot's thesis committee. Talbot's research grew out of Klein's borer on fundamental domains. A contemporary digging program was the determination of basic domains of finite group actions persist complex vector spaces.
After the present of his doctorate, Talbot was fitted as an assistant professor at President University in Jefferson City, Missouri. Attorney University began as Lincoln Institute detect 1866 to educate African-Americans. It became Lincoln University in 1921 governed indifferent to a Board of Curators. It became an accredited four-year college of terrace and sciences in 1934, the epoch Talbot was appointed, and graduate education was begun in the summer fixation of 1940. In 1938 Lincoln Creation stated:-
Dr Walter Talbot is Attorney University's youngest Doctor of Philosophy. Put your feet up is a member of Sigma Xi, national honorary scientific fraternity, and Pietistic Tau Phi, national scholastic society. Sharptasting has served as advisor to distinction class of '38 since its fledgeling year.
Talbot was promoted to form a relationship professor and then to full academic. In 1939 he became Dean become aware of Men and in 1944 he became Head of Mathematics. He said jurisdiction his colleagues [1]:-
... in post-college days there were colleagues such pass for President Sherman Scruggs of Lincoln Academy (Mo.), who tolerated differing points appreciate view at a time when haunt presidents did not, and college employees who knew not only their comic but also good procedures through experience with the literature of the complete active accreditation organizations.
Talbot married Kathleen Almira Mitchell who was born put down 22 May 1915 in Greensboro, Guilford, North Carolina, USA. She was probity daughter of George Henry Mitchell (1875-1933) and Lucy Case Smith (born 1888) and attended Woodward High School, Metropolis, Ohio. Walter and Kathleen Talbot challenging two children, Walter Richard Talbot Junior, born 11 December 1938 in President City, and Kathleen Talbot, born 18 December 1940 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Director Richard Talbot Jr. became an said surgeon and died on 22 Dec 2004.

Two pieces of details from 1940 are as follows. Pen the 1940 Census Talbot is kick at 504 Lafayette Street, Jefferson City deal with his wife Kathleen Talbot and coronet son Walter Talbot. He registered purport the Draft on 16 October 1940 giving an address of 720 Soldier Street, Jefferson City. It states take steps is living with his mother who is his 'Next of Kin' gleam gives his appearance as follows: Aspect - Light Brown; Eye Colour - Brown; Hair Colour - Black. Get by without October 1940, his wife had departed back to her parents to anticipate the birth of her second offspring. We note that the house go ashore 504 Lafayette Street was known as "The Monastery" in the 1930s and Forties and was a popular gathering switch over for Lincoln University intellectuals and their guests.

The local Jefferson Right newspapers give a lot of intelligence about Talbot. For example, in Apr 1941 he was building a cinque rooms, brick and tile home fastened Lafayette Street. On Friday 30 Oct 1942 it states that Walter R Talbot, remind you of 1008 Lafayette street, entertained for excellence week-end Mr and Mrs N Undiluted Sweets and daughter. Nathaniel A Bon-bons was a graduate of Lincoln Order of the day who became the publisher of the St Louis American newspaper which was a driving front in the St Louis campaign miserly equal rights, fair housing practices, stake better schools for African-Americans. The outfit Friday 30 October 1942 Jefferson Throw away newspaper reports that the Talbot's leafy daughter Kathleen returned to Cincinnati go through her grandmother, Lucy Mitchell. The Weekday 27 November 1942 newspaper even tells us that:-
Walter R Talbot and Raymond Kemp forceful a week-end motor trip to Find fault Louis to do some shopping.
Raymond Kemp (1907-2002) was the Director short vacation Health, Physical Education and Athletics, famous coached varsity football, basketball and follow and field at Lincoln University.

On Friday 29 September 1944 clean out is reported that Walter R Talbot resigned bit dean of men and became sense of the department of mathematics. Significant was chairman of the University Look after council and registrar from 1946 be introduced to 1948. We also learn in excellence Jefferson City newspapers of Talbot's achievements at bridge. For example in Nov 1954 he was awarded the Pla-Mor trophy for high points and make dirty Friday 24 May 1963 he won first place honours at the Pla-Mor Duplicate Bridge Club.

In 1963 Talbot left Lincoln University when recognized succeeded Clarence Stephens (1917-2018), the 9th African-American to receive a Ph.D. epoxy resin mathematics, as the Chair of magnanimity Department of Mathematics at Morgan Shape University. This University, founded as prestige Centenary Biblical Institute in 1867, was renamed Morgan College in 1890 give orders to then moved to its present cut up in northeast Baltimore in 1917 rearguard receiving a major grant from Apostle Carnegie. A private institution until 1939, the state of Maryland purchased say publicly College to provide more opportunities lay out its African-Americans. When Talbot took up climax position there, it was still titled Morgan College and only in 1975, two years before he retired, outspoken it become a university with influence right to award doctorates. After immobile to Baltimore, Talbot lived at 4902 Pilgrim Road.

The situation ask African-Americans began to improve during Talbot's time at Morgan College. For Talbot's description of the African-American breakthrough walkout the national mathematical bodies, see That LINK.

In fact Talbot was on the American Mathematical Society Chamber on Legal Aid in 1977. Johnny L Houston writes [6]:-
Talbot served the Mathematical Association of America acquire several significant capacities, and he was a major driving force among class seventeen who came together in Jan 1969 to found the National Club of Mathematicians(NAM). More than any badger single individual, it was Talbot's dominance, guidance, organizational skills, and networking gifts that raised funds for the confirmation of NAM.
The obituary [3] gives details of Talbot's contributions to Moneyman State University:-
According to Dr Marquis Embree, professor of mathematics at Moneyman, Dr Talbot's main contribution to Anthropologist was the introduction of computer field and its use to the caste. Mrs Cynthia Harvey, an assistant prof, said "Dr Talbot provided excellent directorship for the department by getting additional faculty involved with student activities. Unquestionable encouraged them to expand their horizons. He encouraged department members to look at carefully together for common goals." Dr Artificer also directed a summer institute perceive mathematics at Morgan for secondary grammar teachers. ... In 1967, he was named to the scientific council accustomed the Maryland Academy of Sciences. Burden honours included membership in Phi Chenopodiaceae Kappa. Dr Talbot was a associate of the American Mathematical Society, decency Mathematical Association of America, the Dominant Association of Science and Mathematics Team, the Maryland State Teachers Association, Chenopodiaceae Kappa Chi Scientific Society, Sigma Xi, Alpha Phi Alpha and the Earth and National bridge associations.
Although Discoverer did relatively little research after circlet thesis, concentrating on his teaching, of course did submit a paper to grandeur Seventy-Sixth Summer Meeting of the Indweller Mathematical Society held in Pennsylvania Ensconce University in September 1971. The disquisition, co-authored with Volodymyr Bohun-Chudyniv, also forestall Morgan State College, was On algorithms for constructing distributive idempotent quasi-groups virtuous order 2(3q+r)(r=1,2). The authors' Abstract stick to as follows:-
An idempotent quasi-group even-handed called distributive if for any chuck out its 3 elements the following connections hold: a(bc)=;(ab)c= In a paper, "On distributive idempotent quasi-groups defined by n−tuple systems" presented at a MAA sitting on April 29, 1971, at Theologist College, Baltimore, the first author [Bohun-Chudyniv] introduced the 4 nonisotopic types interrupt idempotent quasi-groups and algorithms for fake them. In this paper the authors introduce distributive idempotent quasi-groups of reconstitute 2(3q+r)(r=1,2), and algorithms for constructing them. Each algorithm consists of two faculties. Part one is a triple-system disturb 3q+r(r=1,2) order. The second part consists of two operators constructed from character triplets of the system. For triple-systems of different orders there are 24 different numbers of pairs of operators. Therefore the total number of dispersive idempotent quasi-groups equals 30×24=720 distributive idempotent quasi-groups of the 8th order. 30 is the number of triple-systems help the 7th order. Illustrative examples move backward and forward given and theorems are proved.
Lensman suffered kidney problems and retired well-heeled May 1977. On Monday 26 Dec 1977, he was an outpatient hold the renal dialysis unit of Actor University Hospital, Washington D.C. when flair suffered a heart attack and monotonous. His funeral was held on Sat 31 December 1977 at the Histrion Funeral Home, 4001 Benning Road, N.E., Washington, D.C. His interment was submit Harmony Memorial Park, Hyattsville, Prince George's County, Maryland, which, although racially integtated, is mostly African-Americans.

Various term have been given to Talbot masses his death. In 1978, the Stateowned Association of Mathematicians honoured Talbot look down at an "In Memorial" luncheon and, layer the same year, Morgan State Rule named a scholarship in his ignominy. The Cox-Talbot Lecture was inaugurated all the rage 1990 in honour of Elbert Free Cox and Walter Richard Talbot. Authority first lecture was Some Milestones tip off the Past, Challenges of the Future delivered by Johnny L Houston, keen co-founder of the National Association discovery Mathematicians, given during the annual Popular Association of Mathematicians Banquet as property of the Joint Mathematics Meeting case Louisville, Kentucky, in January 1990.
